These beautiful glasses are manufactured in Sabae, Fukui Prefecture, which is known as the sacred place for the production of eyeglasses. The precision and attention to detail in Sabae are exceptional, making their eyewear renowned for intricate craftsmanship and innovative design. The craftspeople in Sabae take great pride in their work and consider it an honour that their glasses will become part of someone's face. The handcrafting techniques used by artisans in Sabae have contributed to the robustness for which their glasses are famous.
For over 10 years, Calee eyewear has been made in Sabae with minimal production. A few experienced artisans handcraft each pair of glasses, creating complex designs and delicate curves that cannot be replicated through mass production.
This model is a hybrid between a 1950s Wellington and a traditional Boston style frame. The frame is made of cellulose acetate, one of the highest quality and premium materials for eyeglass construction. Cellulose acetate is highly durable, resistant to temperature changes, and comfortable to wear for extended periods. The hinge connecting the temple and rim is made with seven hinges, the highest peak in Japan.
The lenses have a light brown tint, which is ideal for overcast or partially sunny conditions. They allow a good amount of light in, making them unsuitable for very sunny conditions. However, you can wear them all year round and in many situations, including indoors.
